Elementary School Application Process Applying to del Sol at the elementary school level is a multi-step process. School Tour & Overview Parents attend a 2 ½ hour introductory orientation* to del Sol School, focusing on philosophy of education and examples of the way students learn in a constructivist environment. *This meeting is presented in a lecture format and is not appropriate for children. Parent Observations of the School Day We ask that you observe for a whole morning (8:00 to noon). This allows you to see the flow of the day and visit all classrooms. Receive Application Packet This contains an Application and further reading which introduces important elements of the home-school partnership. Submit Application a) an Interview will be arranged with each child's current/former teacher(s), if applicable b) Teacher and/or child observation visits - One of del Sol's teachers will observe your child to ensure s/he and dS are a good match. This will take place either at your child's present school, or by having your child come to dS. Sometimes additional visits/days are requested. It is common practice for older applicants to attend for 3-5 consecutive days. Parents will be notified within a few days of this observation if staff thinks that dS's program and the child are a good match. Enrollment Interview Parents, administration, and classroom teacher meet to discuss any remaining questions based on visits and readings. Your active investigation of dS through your visits and readings will help you as you determine your compatibility with dS's philosophy and your desire to enter an active partnership with dS and your family. Decision for Enrollment Enrollment decisions are made based on available positions, dS's ability to meet your child's needs, and compatibility between dS and the family. IMPORTANT NOTE: Vital to del Sol's philosophy and mission is the partnership between home and school. Except for cases where special circumstances which prevent del Sol from being able to meet a child's needs, enrolling one child and not others is not in keeping with our mission. Therefore, we have a "no split-family policy" for initial enrollment and yearly re-enrollment. As younger children reach early childhood, it expected that parents will enroll their three year olds in d S's program. Pre-school at dS makes a very real difference.
